Headache - FAQ

There are several reasons why someone experiences headaches. Although there are more than 300 different types of headaches, most common headaches are migraines, tension headaches or neck related headaches (Cervicogenic Headache).

If you have other symptoms with along with intense headache, like nausea & vomiting, dizziness, loss of vision, smell or hearing, or anything unusual, you must contact your doctor immediately.

Other common causes of headaches can be

  • Mental stress
  • Jaw pain and jaw problems
  • Blood pressure issues
  • Medication overuse
  • Nerve problems
  • Dental issues

Your clinician will conduct a thorough assessment including nature of your headache, frequency and triggers, including any general health considerations. Assessment may include tests of your nervous system and your neck. This helps in the appropriate diagnosis of the headache, which is crucial for the optimal treatment and management of your condition.

Physiotherapists with advanced training and skills conduct a thorough assessment of your headache, giving you a proper diagnosis. Treatment often includes management of contributing factors and avoidance of triggers. In case of cervicogenic (neck related) or jaw related headache, specific treatment targeting the neck can assist significantly. This may include hands on manual therapy of the spine and soft-tissue, including dry needling, massage and manipulative therapy followed by specific exercises.
